Before a piece leaves the workshop, a small tag — about the size of a coin, thinner than a veneer — is set into the wood and sealed under the finish. It has no battery and no moving parts. It's the same quiet technology as a tap-to-pay card (it's called NFC), which means it can sit in a piece for decades doing nothing but waiting.
Hold the top of a phone against the spot — the same touch you'd use to pay at a register. Any recent iPhone or Android does this out of the box. There is nothing to install and nothing to type.
The phone opens the piece's own page. What's on it depends on the piece: at the least, who made it and what it's made of. With a story page, it can carry photos, a written message, a voice recording, a video, and a timeline of moments — the memory the piece was given to carry.
Now available — included at no extra charge with every Crafted Carvings piece. A tap opens the piece's own page: its maker, its materials, and the start of its story. It carries the same written ten-year term as every paid page.
The tag points at a web address you choose — your family site, a photo album, anywhere — and it can be changed later without ever touching the piece.
