QR or NFC for a Gift Tag? It Depends on What You're Tagging

A few months ago, at a local business networking meeting, another crafter showed me his laser-etched metal business cards — he'd built a small anti-metal NFC tag into each one, so tapping a phone against the card pulls up his portfolio with no app and no QR code to scan. I'd never worked with NFC before that. It sent me down a rabbit hole: what could I actually do with this on my own pieces — signs, trays, cutting boards, ornament holders, card holders — that would be worth the extra step, for me and for whoever's buying them?

Here's the short answer I landed on: which tag you want comes down to the material, not how tech-savvy your buyer is. QR codes and NFC tags fail in different ways, and once you know how, matching the tag to the piece is straightforward. Here's how I work through it, piece by piece.

What's actually different between a QR code and an NFC tag

A QR code is a printed pattern a phone's camera reads — point, wait for the link, tap it. No chip, no power, works on any smartphone with a camera from roughly the last fifteen years.

An NFC tag is a small chip and antenna, usually about the size of a coin, embedded in or under the surface. Hold a phone near it — no camera, no app open — and the link opens on its own, on most phones made in the last several years.

Printed pattern versus embedded chip is the whole difference, and it's why the two behave so differently once they're on an object instead of a sheet of paper.

NFC and metal — this part isn't theory for me

Metal is the one material that genuinely breaks standard NFC. The tag works by radio, and metal sitting close to the antenna detunes it — sometimes weakens the read, sometimes kills it outright. A standard NFC tag stuck to the back of a metal tool or under a metal plate usually won't read at all.

The fix is a shielded tag, sometimes called an "anti-metal" or "on-metal" tag — a thin layer between the chip and the metal that blocks the interference. It costs more per tag and runs a little thicker than a standard one. (The exact tags I buy, standard and on-metal, are on the supplies list for makers.)

I'm not guessing about this part. I run anti-metal NFC tags on my own metal tools every day, tracking them with an app I built for exactly that, craftedtracker.app — tap a tag on a chisel or a router and it opens that tool's page instead of a link I have to remember. My build spec: 1" round tags, embedded about halfway through the material. Read range in practice is short — about 2 to 3 cm, roughly 3/4" to 1-1/4" — so the phone has to get close and sit flat against the tag, not just wave nearby.

Most of what I make is wood or Corian, not metal, so this rarely comes up. When it does — a tool, a metal-backed card holder, a piece with a metal inlay — I use a shielded tag, or move a standard tag to a non-metal section a few inches clear of the metal.

How small can a QR code be and still scan

Smaller than most people assume, but there's a floor. As a rough rule, a QR code needs to be about a tenth the size of the distance it'll be scanned from. A tag held a foot from someone's face needs to be roughly an inch across; one meant to be read from three feet away, mounted on a wall, needs to be closer to four inches. Go smaller and the camera has to hunt for it, especially in low light or on a curved surface where part of the code catches a shadow.

This is the part that trips people up on small pieces: an ornament or a keychain often doesn't have an inch of flat space to spare. That's a real point in NFC's favor on anything pocket-sized.

Does NFC survive years of being washed and handled

I can't point you to years of my own customer data on this — I don't have tags out in the world long enough yet, and I'm not going to pretend I do. What I can tell you is how the two are built, which tells you a lot about where each one is likely to fail first.

An NFC tag sealed under a wood or Corian finish has nothing exposed to scratch, scrub, or fade — the chip sits under the surface, the same way an engraving sits under a clear coat. A QR code has to stay visible to work, which means it lives on the surface no matter what. A sticker won't hold up — it peels, fades, and scratches off inside a season. A code lasered into the material and sealed under a food-safe finish holds up much better, closer to how the rest of the piece wears. But it's still an exposed mark, and heavy scrubbing over years will soften the contrast well before a sealed chip underneath would have any reason to fail.

Why some buyers never get the tap to work

The most common reason a tap doesn't do anything has nothing to do with the tag: the phone has to be unlocked. Tap a locked phone and most of them buzz or flash to show they saw something, but the link won't open until you unlock it. I found this out the annoying way testing my own tags — a string of taps that seemed to "not work" turned out to just be me tapping a locked screen.

That's worth a line wherever the tag is — "unlock your phone, then tap" catches more people than you'd think. It's also worth keeping a QR code as a fallback, so a phone that won't read NFC at all, or a buyer who never gets the tap right, still has a way in.

When to put both on the same piece

I put both on anything that might pass through more than one person's hands, or where I can't fully control the material — a card holder that gets regifted, a tray with a mixed wood-and-metal design. NFC as the primary way in, a small printed QR code as backup on the back or underside. It costs a little more space and a few extra minutes, and it means the piece works no matter who ends up holding it or what phone they've got.

If I had to pick one thing to decide on first, it's the material, not the buyer. A single material and a phone-comfortable buyer — pick whichever suits the surface. Mixed materials, or a piece that's going to outlast the person who bought it — build in both.
